Former Defense Secretary during Iraq War, Donald Rumsfeld, Has Died

On June 29th, 2021, former Defense Secretary of the United States of America Donald Rumsfeld passed away due to Multiple Myeloma at the age of 88. He was a prominent yet very controversial player in the American politics. He was a member of Republican Party. He served in various positions during the Ford, Nixon, and Reagan administrations, including as White House chief of staff (1973-1974), Secretary of Defense (1975-1977), and director of the Office of Economic Opportunity (1969-1970).

He is known for a lot of controversial actions during his tenures as Defense Secretary. Donald Rumsfeld also holds the label of being both the oldest and the youngest Secretary of Defense. He was the first person to hold the office in two nonconsecutive terms. He was a seasoned republican politician who served under two presidents. First under Gerald Ford and then under George W. Bush. His legacy has been very controversial due to his decisions during the Iraq War and the War on Terror under George W. Bush’s reign as president. He is best known for implementing the controversial Iraq War and his use of military force against terrorists during his tenure as defense secretary.

His actions did get him and the respective governments a lot of criticism but he stood by his decisions. Donald Rumsfeld is known for his ability to preserve the country’s unity and respect, even with an overwhelming opposition. He oversaw the country’s response to 9/11, Iraq War, and Hurricane Katrina.

He was known for his outspokenness and his strong beliefs in the American military. He had a significant influence on the foreign policy of George W. Bush, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he also increased military spending in the United States. According to him, he was working on protecting and securing the country from threats however his actions and decisions were considered as violent and extreme by many which is why he became so controversial in the political arena. He was also considered responsible for approving violent punishment for inmates caught in the US War on Terror.

His death also got a reaction from the former President of the United States, George W. Bush who applauded Rumsfeld’s service to the country. However human rights organizations, political opponents, and other groups remember him for his controversial and violent decisions.
