We live in worrying times. The CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) was passed by the government on March 27, 2020, to provide fast and direct economic assistance to all Americans facing financial hardship as a result of COVID 19.
Direct payments or stimulus checks have already been sent out to thousands of Americans, adding up to a whopping $159 million in total to the national debt. Although the lump sum sounds a lot, the individual payments have been modest.
For example, the first round of the stimulus check included $500 for every child under 17, and although this was helpful to some families, this didn’t help high school seniors who were too old to qualify for payments. There was criticism that many people missed out on vital funding because of arbitrary rulings that didn’t always seem fair.
The HEROES Act
Now there is some call for a second stimulus check to be made. This has not been made clear yet but according to Congress, $3 trillion has been earmarked for the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions, or HEROES Act. If this is brought into law, it means that the government should authorize another stimulus check for most households.
The HEROES Act does seem more generous than the original stimulus act but don’t expect that claiming payments is going to be easy.
You will have to apply for the payments and if you are a taxpayer, so you will need to file your tax information, including your tax return for 2019. According to the IRS, there are delays in processing applications. Everyone’s circumstances are slightly different and this combined with the general anxiety and worry of job losses, insolvency and fears of contracting the virus, in 2020, the U.S. is not the easiest place in the world to live right now.
We all wish things would just return to normal, but in the meantime millions of Americans are being forced to apply for state aid. This is a stressful and extremely worrying time for everyone.
