Reader Alan e-mailed the above photo. He explained: “Lake-On-The-Campus at Southern Illinois University. This may come as a surprise to Europeans used to urban universities, but in the US universities, especially land-grant university, often include huge tracts of land. In this case the university has a 40-acre lake, a farm of roughly equal size, and a dairy center. ff to the far left you can see the small campus beach in the distance.”

Reader Alan e-mails: “Andrew Sullivan has a feature on his site called ‘A view from your window’ where he posts pictures posters send him from their homes. I always found it kind of interesting, and also informative to see images of various places.
“I wonder if your site would benefit from something similar–though I don’t know if you have the space for it. It might prove helpful in educating people about various places and countries, to dispell the stereotypes I’ve mentioned before.”
I like this feature at The Daily Dish as well and find it a great idea to do the same thing here: the only problem is that Andrew has 75,000 hits per day, whereas I have 1,000. This means that there are far more people who (can) send Andrew a photo. That being said, even if we’ll only be able to publish a photo every week or so, it’s still nice so, I have decided to do what Alan asked. Let me start off with this foto:

Izmir, Turkey.
