One million signatures may not force the Cuban government in and of itself to release Cuba’s political prisoners. But, one million signatures may be a giant step in exposing the reality of Cuba’s human rights violations to the world and especially to those who simply have refused to acknowledge said reality.A number of human rights groups, organizations and institutions have come together in support of a petition calling for the release of Cuba’s political prisoners.The text of said petition is short, concise and to the point:

Cuba has a new president. Raul Castro. The little brother of Fidel. If this isn’t a great example of “say hello to the new boss, same as the old boss,” I don’t know what is. There’s good news though: I don’t think that Raul is as strong a leader as Fidel was. In other good news he announced that “the government needed to change to survive in the new era.” (more…)

One of the world’s most oppressive dictators has retired: earlier today, Fidel Castro announced that he would no longer be Commander-in-Chief of Cuba, the country he ruined. The announcement came 19 months after he underwent stomach surgery and, thus, 19 months after he last truly and publicly ruled. (more…)
