Barack Obama seems to support faith-based initiates. PoliGazette’s Michael Merrit takes a look at Obama’s plan. (more…)
Different media sources are reporting that Hillary Clinton will throw her support behind Barack Obama at an event on Saturday. The original idea was to do it Friday, but the release of the information has moved the event to Saturday to allow for her supporters to gather. That certainly seems fair enough. It should be noted that even if the media wanted her to concede at the very second Obama got the magic number, Obama said nothing of the sort. He has been completely gracious and patient, acknowledging Clinton as a very close second with wide support.
I saw Clinton’s speech and Obama’s speech. Obama’s people cheered Clinton when he praised her. Her people had to be prodded several times, virtually ordered, by Clinton to give Obama an applause.
The next question is the VP slot. Does she really want it or just to be asked? The vetting process is brutal, does she REALLY want her, and especially Bill’s records and finances to be fully vetted or does she want a theatrical effect? Only she knows for sure.
At AmbivaBlog I promoted this comment by Donna B. of Opining Online to the front page because it is a piece of vivid, unmanipulated evidence — from a private family gathering, not a reporter’s mike shoved in someone’s face — that needs to be noted:
I just spent the weekend with my family in SW Arkansas, a county that went for Kerry in 2004, and where most of my relatives are life-long Democrats. The discussion was mostly about voting Republican for the first time in their lives if Obama gets the nomination and it’s all about religion. These gun and religion clinging Democrats are completely repulsed by Rev. Wright and his message and having gone to church all their lives, are unwilling to forgive Obama for even joining that church. Several of them said outright that “you can’t find Jesus Christ” by immersing yourself in the hate of any other human regardless of color. Granted, it’s a small sample, but I was really quite amazed at the disappointment expressed.
Point taken. (more…)
I, like so many road weary reporters I’ve been watching today, can barely believe it. The primary race is very nearly over. In a matter of hours, not days, the final primaries will be finished, and it looks like the magic number will actually be reached. Obama is planning a big rally in Minnesota, and Clinton another in New York. Speculation abounds as to the content of those events, but everyone seems to agree they will have very different tones.

Clinton, showing that she apparently can’t help herself, once again made a false claim. This one is even more hilariously wrong than the whole landing under sniper fire snafu.
This time, Clinton seeks to convince us that she opposed the Iraq war before Barack Obama.

Rather than investing the effort to construct policy cases against Barack Obama, critics have relied almost exclusively upon attacks on Obama’s (and his supporters’) authenticity. Basically, every day brings a new opportunity to find some story that reveals Obama doing (gasp!) politics, with all the spin and evasions that the scandal-obsessed media demands as the price of admission. Critics allege, however, that Obama “claims to be different”. This allows them to give Hillary Clinton a complete pass for everything that they condemn Obama for. (more…)

How well do you know the people around you? Let me ask you, do you agree with every single thing that every one of your friends, family, clergymen believes? You better, if you’re planning on being a politician. Oh and it doesn’t matter that someone might be 80% great and 20% nasty, you’ll be crucified for that 20%. Oh and don’t forget to read the church newsletter! Remember, you agree with every single word in it unless you denounce it!

Being that our senior (ejem) blogger has made it his mission to show examples of people not being impressed with Obama or disliking his speech or both, I thought maybe some perspective was in order. I trust that any examples of negative reactions will be well covered, so I’ll occupy myself with good ones. Below the fold some links to articles and statements of people in reaction to the speech.

Today Barack Obama delivered a strong speech about race and how, in his opinion, this country needs to reconcile its color issues. The man is an inspiring speaker, no doubt. But what of his substance? Do his ideas represent what is best for the future of this country? In some respects, perhaps.
In my mind today’s speech was most notable for what Obama said about American Christianity:
“that anger in some of Reverend Wright’s sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour in American life occurs on Sunday morning”
