Polls: Obama Breaks 50%

October 14th, 2008 By: Claudia, Assistant Editor | Tags:

Just when it seemed that McCain was finally gaining some ground, new polls have come out that have pushed Obama over a milestone.

Both RealClearPolitics and Pollster are reporting that Obama has broken 50% in the presidential poll. RCP has Obama up by 7.4 points and Pollster has him up by 8.

Seems like a lot of voters have answered McCain and Palin’s question of “Just who is Barack Obama?” with “A guy I’m going to vote for”.

Though most of them still can’t answer the actual question of who he is other than “I blank slate upon whom I can cast my own preferences for ‘change’.”

Christine, just as most McCain supporters can’t say much past “A maverick who talks straight and’ll keep us safe from insert-enemy-here”

Claudia, I agree that there are low information voters on both sides, as there always are- but I think conservatives largely admit this while liberal/progressives pretend they have a mandate for their agenda even though they’re partly put in place by people who had no idea what change was being promulgated.

Again, I’m not trying to say one side is worse than the other in terms of voting for an image instead of policy, but still sometimes the examples are hilarious like in this Stern interview:
    http://hotair.com/archives/2008/10/14/audio-obamas-supporters-on-policy/

You’ve got to admit, that’s funny.

But mainly I’m not talking about the people who are completely uninformed- what bothers me more about the support Obama’s getting is the degree to which moderates and conservatives are voting for him based on temperament and ignoring his liberalism.
Also, I think there’s a difference between defaulting to conservatism (which is as Buckley famously described, “standing athwart history and shouting “stop”) vs. voting for progressive policies without understanding what those policies really are or could lead to. It’s like the hippocratic oath doctor’s take to “do no harm”- you don’t start administering treatments without knowing what you are doing.
