India, Pakistan Talk About Kashmir Situation
The situation at the Pakistan-India border in the Indian region of Kashmir seems to become increasingly violent. India told Pakistan on Monday to ‘put a stop to ceasefire violations along their shared border.’
Officials of both governments met in New Delhi, India’s capital.
Kashmir is one of India’s most problematic regions. A lot of Muslims live in this region, quite some of whom support an independence movement which has fought the Indian government for years. Pakistan, of course, supports the separatists, using them as a means to keep the Indians focused on their domestic issues, and to weaken the neighboring country by doing so.
The relationship between the two countries, who have been enemies for decades, improved significantly under former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf’s leadership. Now that he has stepped down, however, and Pakistan has new leaders, India worries about the future and nature of the relationship.
