Rezko Starts Talking: Problems on the Horizon for Obama?

October 11th, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

Tony Rezko, who was convicted of charges of corruption and bribery earlier this year, is reported to be talking to investigators about other suspects. As the Associated Press remarked in its report on the matter, ‘the political fallout could be explosive.’

Rezko has connections to virtually every major Democratic player in Chicago and Illinois such as Governor Rod Blagojevich and Senator Barack Obama.

Especialy Blagojevich is considered vulnerable because he ‘faces multiple federal investigations over how [his administration] handed out jobs and money with advice from Rezko.’

He is not the only one, however.  As said, Obama is also potentially vulnerable. Rezko funded Obama’s earliest political campaigns and helped the Obamas purchase an expensive home with a remarkable discount. Additionally, Rezko offered Obama a job when the latter finished law school. The AP believes, however, that the fallout for Obama will be reasonably minimal, in so far that it may be difficult for investigators to truly ‘find dirt’ on Obama’s involvement with questionable acts.

“I think this strikes fear into the Blagojevich administration and the Statehouse Democrats but not into the Obama campaign,” Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Westmont, a John McCain delegate to the GOP convention but an old friend of Obama, said.

Although some may feel like that, others do believe that an October surprise is in the making for Obama. The website HillBuzz, for instance, reported on Saturday that its information led it to believe that Obama could potentially face charges. This sentiment seems a bit far-fetched presently, but the Chicago Sun-Times explained in a column that the way for prosecutors to get to Obama is through Alexi Giannoulias, Illinois state treasurer. Giannoulias family runs banks which may have questionable ties to Rezko and (potentially) organized crime. When Giannoulias ran for office in 2003, Barack Obama suddenly endorsed him. This while Giannoulias had never run for office before, nor had he ever voted. The two were connected, however, through Tony Rezko and Giannoulias’ family (business). In other words, if Rezko started to talk about Giannoulias and the family’s banks, it could be that investigators will end up… at Obama.

At this moment that is all possibly, perhaps, could be, if, etc., which has to be pointed out by every single person writing about this matter, but there certainly seems some dirt here worthy of further investigation. As Chicago resident Rick Moran explained in a post for his blog Right Wing Nut House, the ties between Obama and the Giannoulias family run deep.

Mark Hemingway too explained for NRO’s the Corner:

So Obama chose to have him associated with his campaign. This was well after it became public that Giannoulias had loaned $11.8 million to Michael Giorango, a convicted bookmaker and prostitution promoter. Giannoulias first denied he personally approved the loan, then Chicago Tribune reported that Giannoulias personally oversaw $11.8 million in mortgage loans to Giorango in 2005. Then Giannoulias said the money had not gone to finance Casinos for organized crime. He appears to have lied again: “But newly obtained records show that $3.6 million of the recent loans were used by Giorango and another convicted felon to acquire a casino boat marina in Myrtle Beach, S.C.,” reported the Tribune.

It’s not like the Obama campaign can credibly say they didn’t know about this before he was out raising money for the campaign. But I’d like to believe major news agencies might want to pull a few reporters out of dumpsters in Wasilla (probably starting to get really cold up there anyway) and get them to Chicago to look into a potential Rezko-Giannoulias connection toot sweet. Maybe there’s nothing there, but it’s worth looking into right?

Speaking as a Chicagoan who’s been following this story closely for some time, I doubt that Rezko will create problems for Obama.  I think that Rod Blagojevich is probably dead meat but Obama’s okay.

If you don’t do anything, you can’t do anything improper.

I think you are wrong. Definitely there is smoke and fire in regard to Obamas connections with Rezko. He might have gotten away with a lot….but the chickens ARE coming home to roost. And it’s about time!!! He’s getting indicted.

How many times did Senator Obama visit Tony Rezko’s house? What was the purpose of these visits? The Times of London reports that “The court is also expected to hear from John Thomas, an FBI mole, who reportedly witnessed Mr Obama and Mr Blagojevich making frequent visits to Mr Rezko.”

I heard strong rumours that the big "O" might be indicted for connections to money laundering, bribes & even murder! The messiah’s worst nightmare is about to start. Hehe!
