Zardari: The Hardest Job in the World
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari gave an interview to the Wall Street Journal recently. The article about it was published this weekend.
During the interview he said he hoped that “the world” would give Pakistan $100 billion in aide. This money, he said, will be mostly used to pay for the country’s imports of oil and food.
“I need your help,” he said more than once. “If we fall, if we can’t do it, you can’t do it.”
Most troubling about Zardari’s words is that he seems to be yet another leader who does not understand that if you want to modernize a developing country, you have to make it independent immediately. You should not count on foreign ‘aide’; when offered, you should decline. Those in charge of developing countries should strive for complete independence. Being dependent on foreign countries will prevent any developing country from reaching its full potential and acting in its own interest.
