Ahmadinejad To Speak at United Nations

September 23rd, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was set Tuesday to speak for the second time in his career to the United Nations. Beforehand he said on public radio that his country is not looking for a confrontation with the United States, or with any other country for that matter. Additionally, Ahmadinejad said, Tehran is willing to work with the U.S. on a variety of issues, such as security in Iraq.

At the same time, Iran is not willing to let the U.S. or any other country interfene in its domestic affairs, such as its nuclear project.

Ahmadinejad warned on Sunday that “[i]f anyone allows himself to commit even a tiny offense against Iran’s legitimate interests, borders and sacred land, our armed forces will break his hand before he pulls the trigger.”

The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency said days ago that Iran was not cooperating and that it was difficult if not impossible for the agency to find out what the Iranians are doing exactly.

The speech also comes at a moment when Ahmadinejad is severely criticized at home by hardliners. The Grand Ayatollah Khamenei responded angrily to Ahmadinejad when the latter said that Iran does not hate the Israeli people but merely their leaders. Khamenei found this insufficient and blasted Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad will undoubtedly continue to delay and make matters impossible for the IAEA. The strategy of Iran is very clearly to stall for time.
