U.S. Refuses to Deliver Weapons to Israel

September 12th, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

The Haaretz reports that the United States has refused to sell weapons to Israel in recent months, fearing that the weapons may be used in an Israeli strike against Iranian nuclear facilities. Such an attack would, the U.S. fears, result in chaos and widespread anger, possibly violence and even a regional war.

If true, the report is likely to anger American conservatives who strongly support Israel. Most vocal conservatives believe the U.S. should stand by Israel no matter what, and especially in these troubled and dangerous days. Israel feels threatened by an Iran trying to develop nuclear weapons and is, it seems, preparing to remove this threat by force, if necessary. American conservatives are likely to believe that Israel is ‘right’ in this situation and should be supported by the U.S. so it can take care of itself against its extremist enemies in the region.

Most progressives, on the other hand, will be happy to hear that George W. Bush refuses to deliver weapons to Israel which can be used in strikes described above. These people have often said the U.S. was to supportive of Israel in recent decades. They also argue that Iran could unleash terror as never seen before, if attacked.
