Cheney: US Supports Ukraine, Georgia Joining NATO

September 6th, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

US Vice President Dick Cheney held talks with world leaders Saturday on the last stop of a four-nation tour in which he pledged US support for ex-Soviet republics after Russia’s conflict with Georgia.’

He met first with Jose Aznar, Spain’s former president. After that meeting he would meet with Israeli President Shimon Peres and British Petroleum and Goldman Sachs International Board Chairman Peter Sutherland later today.

Cheney expressed support for Ukraine and Georgia eventually joining NATO, the organization created to contain Russia. He also made clear to the countries in the region - Georgia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan - that Washington has a “deep and abiding interest” in them.

According to experts, the U.S. vice president will talk to other leaders of NATO countries about the futures of Georgia and Ukraine in this regard. European NATO members opposed a U.S. plan to let Georgia join the organization, but that sentiment may very well have changed due to Russia’s invasion of the small but democratizing and western-oriented country.
