McCain and Palin Going to Region Hit by Gustav

Earlier Sunday it was announced that both Senator John McCain and his running mate for the presidency Governor Sarah Palin would travel to Mississippi in order to help people prepare for Hurricane Gustav.

The two were invited by Miss. Governor Haley Barbour.

Not only did the two decide to visit Mississippi, McCain also considers delaying the Republican Convention. The Convention is set to start Monday, September 1, but McCain may delay it if Gustav promises to cause a lot of problems.

The decision to go to Mississippi is politically smart; it shows Palin and McCain as committed people, who care about average Americans. Furthermore, they present themselves as true civil leaders. Citizens in trouble want the government to lead, to be visible, and to help out.

Delaying the Republican Convention may also be a smart thing to do; when a lot of Americans suffer, it is unwise to organize a big party. Additionally, newspapers and channels will not report about the Convention as much as they would when no hurricane would cause trouble. The eyes of the world will be directed at Mississippi and Louisiana, not on the Convention in which McCain will accept his nomination.
