US Military: 11,000 Iraqi Prisoners Released

August 30th, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

The United States military said Saturday it had released 11,000 prisoners this year. “These men, once considered a security threat to Iraqi civilians, as well as coalition and Iraqi forces, have completed their internment and can go on to lead productive lives,” the military said in a statement.

In 2007 8,900 prisoners in Iraq were released. 2,000 more have been released in 2008, even though there are still some five months to go in this year.

“These men, once considered a security threat to Iraqi civilians, as well as coalition and Iraqi forces, have completed their internment and can go on to lead productive lives,” the military said in a statement.

Although this is certainly a sign that the situation in Iraq is truly improving and that extremists have given up the fight against the democratically elected Iraqi government and its American ally a lot of work still remains to be done: ‘Earlier this month Iraq’s human rights ministry said around 47,400 detainees were held in US and Iraqi prisons across the country, including 23,200 in facilities operated by the American military.’
