When History Makes the Latest Flap a Non-Story

The "he’s an elitist" story of the day is all about Barack Obama’s plans to give his acceptance speech tomorrow in front of a replica of a wall of an ancient Greek temple, column, lintel, and all.

Besides the fact that the entirety of Western culture largely owes its existence to the Greeks, those people who were paying attention in 2004 noted that the setup seemed oddly familiar to one they had seen before.

Oh yes: the stage set up at the Republican National Convention where George Bush gave his acceptance speech.

When blasting someone for doing something, it would do well to make sure your side hadn’t done it before.

I would think  "Mission Accomplished"– the most misstaged moment in history– would serve as a warning to any politician who is tempted to stage their big event. LOL

    two comments:
    1) I’m not sure how effective of a counter-argument it is to say "Well Bush did it too!"  Has n’t that become a fairly low threshhold
    2) And (hopefully this doesn’t sound contradictory but anyway) Wasn’t GW President at the time.

    1) Why not use it?  Hypocrisy should be pointed out where it’s due.

    2) I don’t see why this should matter in terms of the convention.  When he was there, he was acting in his capacity as the nominee, not President.

Personally, I don’t care how a party chooses to decorate their convention hall/speech stadium.  Give it a disco theme for all I care.  I just think that if you’re going to criticize a party for how they’re holding their convention, make sure yours didn’t do it four years ago.

Maybe it was because they considered it a rip off. But then again, Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
