Turkey: 11 Injured by Car Bomb
My home city away from home, Izmir, has been hit by terrorists. A car packed with explosives exploded when two minibuses, one filled with soldiers the other with policemen, exploded.
Izmir, known to some as Smyrna (its old Greek name), is Turkey’s larget city. It has between three and four million inhabitants.
Not only is Izmir one of the biggest cities in Turkey, it is also one of the most secular ones. Wherever one goes, one sees flags with Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, on them. Even if one walks for three hours, one only sees a handful of women with a headscarf. The people there are modern and polite. Secular yet religious in their private life.
The PKK is probably responsible for this attack. The Kurdish terrorist organization has staged attacks more often in this important Turkish Aegean coastal city. It has a large Kurdish population nowadays; most of them migrated from the East.
