Pelosi On Board for Drilling Vote…With Conditions

August 13th, 2008 By: Michael Merritt | Tags:

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said yesterday that she would be willing to hold a vote on opening up offshore drilling, but only if a bill addresses issues such as tax credits for wind and solar energy and releasing oil from the strategic petroleum reserve.

It kind of looks like she took a cue from Barack Obama, who said not too long ago that he would also be willing to support a bill opening offshore drilling, so long as it also addressed alternatives.

So, John McCain is all drilling, all the time, right?  Not so fast.  A week ago he said that he would be willing to support a bill with alternative energy initatives…so long as the bill opened up offshore drilling!

Though, now he’s holding off officially backing a compromise until he sees the actual language of the bill.  This is not a bad idea, and one that I expect Obama and Pelosi will actually do.

I’m an optimistic guy, and think Congress might actually be able to pull something off, so long as Harry Reid can be convinced to hop on the bandwagon, anyway.

Still, now that both candidates are flip-flopping (depending on who you ask) on this issue, who do I side with?  Maybe Obama and McCain should just abandon all pretenses and run together.

Since these days they seem to be agreeing a lot more than they disagree.

This is a win, win situation for the people.  Not for either Obama or McCain.  In fact by working out a compromise in advance it makes it a non issue for the upcoming election.  Good for Obama.  Bad for McCain.

I was asked who would make the best Veep choice for Barak Obama.  I honestly said.  John McCain.  Someone asked me the same question about John McCain.  I responded seriously.  Hillary Clinton.

Why?  Look at the numbers for Bush and Congress.   The people are angry with every aspect of our government and yet they always vote to keep their own incumbents while pointing to yours and saying they suck.

Term limits havent been discussed this election cycle and they should be.  Its time to think about limiting the effects of entrenched politics in America.  Politicians that do nothing because doing nothing makes sure that the next election that what they are asked to do is still in need of being done.

When will America wake up and realize our politicians are just duping us with more and more failed promises.

Well, looks like I was at least partially wrong. I expected Pelosi (and by extension the dems) too put up more of a fight on this issue, and that Reps actions a few weeks ago had caused them to dig in their heals. I was wrong about that.

I still don’t think it will have a noticeable effect on gas prices now or in the future, but as long as it’s politically feasible it’s not a bad idea. And as a plus, it’s being used to get things that will actually accelerate the time frame in which alternative energy is truely cheaper than oil based energy.

Kevin, even the editorial board at the Washington Post (which agrees with you on policy) is going out of its way to shoot down many of your disingenuous talking points.

And I renew my continuing objection to the fact that you continue to ignore "do both" alternatives and thus you continually misrepresent those disagreeing with you here.

So is negotiation simply a series of “flip-flops”? If so, then I’m all for flip-flops.

The moral high ground is nice and all but I think we vote politicians into to office to GET THINGS DONE!!!

This is the Democrat lead Congress - the proven absolute worst in our Country’s history.   If there is a way to make America worse off for it all, they will find that way.

It indeed isn’t a flip-flop.  This has always been my position, since Obama put his support behind a compromise.

I’m just saying that a flip-flop is what the usual suspects are calling it.
