Chavez Decrees 26 More Socialist Laws

Hero of the far left in both America and Europe, Hugo Chavez, has pushed through 26 new lawscovering changes in areas ranging from the military to small businesses.’ The laws are part of a package that Chavez was able to push through on the last day of his 18-months special powers authority.

Chavez was granted 18 months of special powers so that he could push through socialist laws, without too much opposition. The last day of these 18 months was July 31. That is the day on which the 26 laws were enacted.

‘The new laws includes measures which would set up neighbourhood-based militias, move the country towards a socialist economy and increase state control over agriculture,’ Al Jazeera explains. These neighborhood-based militias will basically function like ‘Cuba’s Committees for the Defence of the Revolution, which encourage citizens to watch for “counterrevolutionary” activities.’

The Venezuela Chamber of Commerce, meanwhile, is not happy with the laws. “We ask the president: Why does he fear democracy?” Jose Manuel Gonzalez, a business chamber leader of Fedecamaras, said.

He added that “[w]e are sure that this is nothing more than imposing the reform project that was rejected in December,” which was quickly denied by the country’s Vice President Ramon Carrizalez.

And so Venezeula continues on its path towards Latin American socialism. The poor may be better off now, but it only takes a couple of years before Chavez’s socialism has devastated the entire country, the poor included.

President Hugo Chavez is also responsible for countless human rights violations. He is currently holding many political prisoners, all of whom were imprisoned by the Venezuelan government on trumped-up charges in cases with manifest due process violations.
