Iran Breaks Deadline
In what cannot possibly surprise anyone, Iran has not responded to the EU’s offers with regards to the country’s nuclear program before the deadline (this weekend). An EU official added, though, that Javier Solana expects an answer “in the coming days.”
There are several reasons for Iran’s reluctance to give the EU an answer:
- Arrogance. Iran is arrogant, and it wants to show the West that it does not care much about what they think and do. ‘We decide on our own affairs,’ is the message the Mullahs want to send.
- Grandstanding. If there’s one thing Islamic extremists enjoy, it’s grandstanding towards the moderate, democratic, and free West. The West is strong, rich and developed. It’s also not Muslim. Giving other radicals the impression that you’re humiliating the West always results in you becoming more popular.
- Stalling time. The longer it takes Iran to answer the EU, the more time it can spend on its nuclear program, and the longer it can divert military action.

Mr. Michael van der Galien,
Arrogance is all yours. First of all Iranian government who helped US succeed in Afghanistan is not Islamic extremist, secondly Iran has consistently operated within international law, and expecting them to roll over and play dead show our arrogance. So with all due respect I must add ignorance to your attributes as well.
The Iran that you are hallucinating is very different than the real thing and you won’t know it unless you go and visit that country. May be then your words could carry a bit more credibility.
and Iran knows the EU’s lack of a backbone pretty well.
Not forgetting the hypocrisy of the US.
