Obama’s Problems With Muslims Continue

July 17th, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

This report at Bloomberg makes crystal clear why it is that increasingly more Muslims are complaining about Barack Obama. They are, they rightfully argue, purposefully ignored by the Senator from Illinois and presumptive Democratic nominee for the presidency, because he fears that associating with Muslims may give American Christian voters the impression that he is Muslim, not Christian.

He is, however, ignoring Muslims at his own peril. As the article makes clear, Obama can’t afford to alienate American Muslims too much. They could cost him a state, and they could give him more negative press than he has ever received.  Negative press, and the notion that Obama is alienating a particular group of people simply because of their religion may result in him losing support nationwide.

What’s most upsetting about his purposeful alienation of Muslims, is that the man simply does not seem to care much. It’s a clear sign that he is willing to do whatever it takes to become America’s president. If that means ignoring Muslims - who are American voters as well, and who, as a result, have the right to be heard - he’s more than willing to do so. Of course, what makes this issue even more telling about Obama’s character is that his father was a Muslim, and his stepfather as well. As such, you could argue, he is not only ignoring and alienating Muslims, but he is willing to break completely with his own past, his upbringing and with his own family (and relatives).

But hey, he’s discriminating against Muslims. Who cares, right?

Yes, it’s really terrible.  The man actually appears to think that he might do more good for Muslims if he wins the election than if he loses.  Shocking.  Simply shocking.  That someone who took the trouble to run would want to win an election.  Tsk, tsk.

Now you can make a reasonable case that it’s very unfortunate that there are so many religious bigots in the country.   A sufficient number that it is (probably) necessary to avoid appearing to be a Muslim (which means, for Obama, avoiding the embrace of Muslims) in order to win.  But there is a fair amount of evidence that it is the reality.  [Just to be fair note that, over a century ago, Britain had a Jewish Prime Minister.  But only this century did any major party in the US dare to nominate a Jew for even Vice President.  Muslims aren't the only religious minority the bigots go after.]

Of course, it’s easy, from the outside, to proclaim that every principle must be fully embraced, and emphasized, at all times.  But in politics, some compromises get made . . . or nothing worthwhile gets accomplished.  If not, you can end up like the Democrats the last couple of decades – losing elections even while being the largest party in the country.

I have been living in a Muslim neighbourhood for like 15 years here in Maryland, But trust me never had any problems witht them. They are extremely nice, coperative and helpful. They respect me, my culture, and my religion and i do the same. Osama is not a muslim i am sure. He thinks he is but hes not. Muslims are the best.
By the way i am not a muslim

    Well written and argued editorial.

As a proud Muslim who happens to be of Indian descent, I am greatly outraged and saddened by Obama’s "win for anything" mentality. He doesn’t realize that is what cost Muslims to flee Sen. Clinton’s primary campaign and to Obama, even though polls suggested Muslims favored Ms. Clinton overwhelmingly before Obama’s presidential announcement.

I have come to grips that as a progessive, left-leaning American Muslim, Obama is a politician as usual, not a man who can provide us with "change we can believe in."

I personally voted for Ron Paul a man of highest dignity and honor, and till this day not regret my vote.

As for Obama’s continued slight at American Muslims, I find it so funny and ironic that it is the Muslims and Michigan that Obama needs to win more so than the Jewish electorate (since the only state where they might alter the election is Florida, and that is not being considered a "must win state" by the Obama campaign where Michigan is; but he still panders to AIPAC and the Jewish lobby.

I predict he will still win a majority of our votes and squeeze out a win Michigan and therefore the presidency, and be arrogant and ungrateful as ever. I of course could be wrong…but we’ll see.
