The Latest from Burma

May 10th, 2008 By: Claudia, Assistant Editor | Tags: , , , ,

The animals that currently see fit to call themselves Burma’s “leaders” are finding new and better ways to show the world what evil brutes they are. After having seized UN food supplies that were destined for survivors of the deadly cyclone, they are now found to be exporting massive quantities of rice to Bangladesh, to great profit of course, while their people die of starvation, thirst and sickness. Forget eating! says the military Junta, voting on a referendum that will cement their rule permanently is much more important (advocating a “no” can get you three years in jail).

In the meantime China continues to drag it’s feet about asking it’s little brother dictatorship to stop it’s obscene human rights abuses. But then, considering their own record, maybe they don’t think it’s all that bad. Personally, invasion is looking better and better.

Thank you all for your interest and help. I would like to point out that military junta is not a legitimate government elected/chosen/ nominated by the people of Burma and their voices/wishes/decisions didnot represent/reflect the voices/wishes/decisions  of the people of Burma. Yes most of the members of the military will gladly surrender to any troops because they as well as their families are also suffering and they have to take the orders to kill their relatives, their own people, even the monks they worshipped.

What a pity that the US military doesn’t have any combat resources available to step in.  Well, maybe someone else will step up.  The French, at least, have been making noises about that.  Maybe they can gather a coalition and do so.  For the sake of the people of Burma, I hope so!

Isn’t that the UN’s job? Humanitarian invasions? ;-)

Burma’s no threat to us. If only they had ever managed to be a real threat….

And the number of times that the UN has invaded in force, merely because the government of a country was killing off large numbers of its residents, would be…?

Not saying that the UN shouldn’t take the lead.  Just that there is no realistic chance of them doing so.

Just as there is no realistic chance of the US invading in force if our own strategic interests are not somehow directly and fairly immediately threatened. Regardless of the combat resources available. Case in point: Darfur.
