Bush Sets a Record

April 22nd, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

He’s the most unpopular president in over 70 years. At this moment, only 28% of the American people approve of the job he is doing, against 69% who disapprove. That’s the highest negative rating in the 70-year history of the Gallup Poll.

For those who are wondering, that means that he’s less popular than LBJ and Harry Truman during the Korean War.

Ironically enough, Bush also holds the record for the highest approval rating of all time: shortly after 9/11, 90% of the American people approved of the job he was doing.

The good news for Bush? He can’t run for reelection.

So is it fair to say (setting aside the Roosevelt exception) that wars and popularity don’t go together?

The evidence from history is pretty good that (in democracies) wars increase popularity of leaders in the short term and decrease it in the long term.

Not to be nit-picky, but you probably meant to say …..less popular than LBJ during Vietnam and Harry Truman during the Korean War…
