Obama and McCain Tied in Head-to-Head Matchup

Filed under: 2008 elections, Feature — Michael van der Galien, Editor-in-Chief on April 10, 2008 @ 10:02 pm CEST

The Associated Press reports that, if elections were held today, Senators John McCain and Barack Obama would both receive 45% of the vote. That means that McCain has completely closed the gap with the likely Democratic nominee in only a couple of weeks time; in February, Obama was leading McCain in a general election matchup by 10%.

Hillary Clinton is doing better right now against the Republican nominee: she leads him still by 3%. That is, however, within the margin of error, meaning that they’re statistically tied.

About the McCain - Obama matchup, there’s this important bit of information about the poll:

McCain leads Obama among men, whites, Southerners, married women and independents.

That’s an important development. If Obama wants to win, he has to win over at least a few of those groups. Independents will, once again, play a vital role. If Obama loses the battle for the independent vote, I don’t quite see how he can possibly win.

Having said all that, my gut feeling is that Obama will probably beat McCain in a general election; he has an entire movement going. His supporters are inspired by him. The same cannot be said for the maverick senator from Arizona. He isn’t inspiring. His speeches are often quite boring. He also doesn’t have a movement going for himself and… he isn’t exactly fundraiser #1.

The polls may tell a different story at this point in time, but I think that chances are that Obama will be America’s next president.

The beauty contest going on between the two remaining democrats is taking its toll. John Edwards is starting to look good for many democrats in the south.
