Should Al Gore safe the Democratic Party from itself? Some senior figures of the party seem to think so.

http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/files/images/gore32.preview.jpg

“Plans for Al Gore to take the Democratic presidential nomination as the saviour of a bitterly divided party are being actively discussed by senior figures and aides to the former vice-president,” the Telegraph reports. “The bloody civil war between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama has left many Democrats convinced that neither can deliver a knockout blow to the other and that both have been so damaged that they risk losing November’s election to the Republican nominee, John McCain.”

OK - there might be something to that but there’s one minor problem: Gore hasn’t run in any primaries. If you nominate him, lots of voters will feel disenfranchised.

And there are more problems, of course: Gore ran in 2000 as VP of one of America’s most popular presidents. Yet he lost. If he lost in 2000 how is he expected to win this time around, in 2008?

He’s still the same person, the person who lost the elections in 2000. Remember the “I invented the Internet” thing? He was called arrogant; well, his arrogance hasn’t disappeared. In fact, he’s probably more arrogant now that he has won the Nobel Peace Prize (for doing something that hasn’t got anything to do with Peace).

“I invented the Internet and I won the Nobel Peace Prize (which I also may have invented); elect me president!”

Yeah, that’ll work.

One gets the impression that Democrats are panicking. That’s the real problem right now: if they would all just stay calm, it would all be fine. But the more they panic, the more amateurish the party seems, and the more likely it is that McCain wins in November, regardless of whom wins the Democratic nomination.

Jules Crittenden:

I think my favorite part … aside from the whole thing, that is … is the idea that replacing the Hero of Tuzla and the change-hoping bigot buddy with an exaggerating doomsayer somehow gets this train back on the rails.

*Interestingly enough, Gore looks a lot like the Dutch word “goor” meaning “gross” or “disgusting.” As such (super means super in Dutch as well) the title of this post could also be “super gross.”

And that was your useless and unfunny word joke of the day.

I’m having a little difficulty relating ends to means in this discussion.  The criticism of the superdelegates casting the deciding votes has been whether that would be democratic.  Drafting a candidate that hasn’t received any votes (at least not in this election) doesn’t seem to improve the democratic legitimacy of the eventual ticket to me.  Or perhaps I’m missing something.

If you think McCain is in a good position vis-a-vis whoever wins the Dem nomination now, he would knock over pompous buffoon gasbag Lyin’ Al like the straw man Al is.

from swimming freestyle:That said, one of the Democrats biggest problems is their hell bent insistence on looking backward for solutions.  The Clintons counted on exactly this tendency when Hillary Clinton began her campaign: she was absolutely convinced she was a lock for the nomination because she knew dutiful Democrats would fondly recall the 1990’s and just assume all we needed to do was elect another Clinton and voila - it’s the 90’s again (well…maybe not everything about the 90’s - just the good stuff).  http://swimmingfreestyle.typepad.com

A bit ironic since their theme song then was "Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow."
