Information in a government indictment indicates that anti-war lawmakers on a trip to Iraq shortly before the 2003 U.S. invasion were funded by Saddam Hussein’s government. Their excuse? They didn’t know, they only sought to see “the plight of Iraq’s children”.
Of course, authoritarian governments only allow visitors to see whatever the government wants them to see. Thus, Stalin once referred to the credulous westerners that he invited for spoon-fed propaganda visits as “useful idiots”. Certainly, the same term can be applied here as well.
