Dalai Lama Threatens to Resign

I’m not sure whether this has ever happened in history - after all, Tibetan Buddhists believe that the Dalai Lama is the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama before him, who was the reincarnation of the DL before him and so on - but the current Dalai Lama is threatening to resign if “violence by Tibetans in his homeland spirals out of control.”

“If things,” he said, “become out of control” his “only option is to completely resign.”

The protests started off peacefully, but they’ve turned violent. The Dalai Lama, as you all will know, opposes violence in every and each case. Violence, he says, is in breach with the core teachings of Buddhism.

One wonders how the Dalai Lama ever hopes to liberate Tibet. Talking to people, and leaving it at that, isn’t going to do the trick. The Chinese government will simply ignore all calls for more autonomy let alone independence for Tibet. Peaceful, silent ‘resistance’ is precisely what the Chinese want.
