Suicide Bomber Kills Pakistani Surgeon General

February 26th, 2008 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

Bad news from Pakistan: a suicide bomber has killed the country’s surgeon general. There were two suicide bombings yesterday, eleven people in total were killed. One of the victims was a high ranking military officer, Lt. Gen. Mushtaq Ahmad Baig, who was Pakistan’s surgeon general.

It seems that the recent elections haven’t exactly accomplished what many hoped. We all hoped that the elections would, almost instantly, stabilize Pakistan.

Never before was such a high ranking member of the military killed. Well, not since Pakistan joined the War on Terrorism that is.

It’s likely that Muslim extremists are behind the attacks of course. These attacks “marked the first major eruption of violence since Pakistan’s leading opposition parties won last week’s parliamentary elections and announced their intention to begin talks with Islamic extremists.”

Interestingly enough “top Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud, declared through a spokesman his group’s readiness to begin negotiating with the new government to end hostilities.”
