US giving ‘best possible intelligence’ against PKK

Turkish Daily News reports that the US State Department has said that ‘it was working to provide Turkey with the “best possible intelligence” in the fight against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and called for more cooperation between Ankara and the Iraqis, implying that Washington’s opposition to a Turkish ground offensive remained in place.’

What’s remarkable about this admission is that, at first, the US didn’t want to say whether it shared it’s intelligence with Turkey or not. It even denied it to a certain extent. The reason for that approach was, of course, that the US doesn’t want to risk losing the support of Kurds in northern Iraq.

But now the US is open about it. This means, it seems, that the US is either not afraid of a Kurdish backlash (because it won’t come) or that the US fears a massive Turkish invasion more than it fears Kurdish anger. It’s probably the second.

What’s also interesting about this development is that there are pro-Kurdish members of the Bush administration who, for a long time, prevented the US from cooperating with Turkey in its war against the PKK. They seem to have lost the internal debate now.

All very good developments indeed.
