Seems to me the entire gist of the article was missed here. That is a subtle ideal of America's foreign policy being projected even to "hell holes" of Africa and that even more importantly Thompson does not pass the Religious Right test.

That is what this article is about. Thompson does not pass muster for Gerson's Religious Right buddies.

So he isn't really a liberal then. Good thing people know the perspective and vantage point of the man who wrote this lame article.

Anyway, I care more for the born in Africa than the boluses in the first world. Guess I am a liberal then

Gerson WAS a speechwriter for W, and is no liberal, but is a Christian evangelical.

WaPo was a liberal newspaper, but has moved to the center, and its editorial page runs the entire gamut of the ideological spectrum.

The Gerson piece is a laffer in all respects. Thompson is correct, solve the infanticide here in the USA rather than whatever is going on in God-forsaken hellholes around the world. Gerson is risible in his "battle of radicals" in Africa. Is he talking about Islam? What a joke this entire piece is. Just a "self-important" inside-the-Beltway jerk-off wanking in public.

Another attempt to head off Thompson because he is the true conservative among the five leading Repub contenders.

Larison also writes on the Gerson article without the attack on liberals. "Insipid" is a better description of Gerson than "liberal".

"a declining but still obscene rate of 1.2 million abortions per year"

Most of which are morally comparable to getting an appendix or a bolus of cells out. The problem isn't the abortions - it's the fact that the factors behind the abortions are almost always bad and will cause more problems apart from the unwanted pregnancies. In short, more abortions point to causing
problems which are more important. I don't give a flip about whatever
is growing in the womb - because that is mostly protected (mostly is not enough, but a ban is an evil so unacceptable it doesn't warrant debate and even makes the current situation preferable) - what I care about are the social problems and the impact on women.

" Or perhaps Gerson, like so many liberals, is possessed of a deep, visceral hatred for anyone who dares to declare that the American federal government should not unnecessarily be involved in the business of wealth redistribution."

Perhaps, yes. BTW - nice going on tying that old "wealth rewhatever" term to something that is more about life, death and keeping societies at large intact. I, for one, thinks that most of Europe, the US and Canada has some sort of responsibility for some of the area's problems. The AIDS problem is one, but I am not expecting it to be top priority - it shouldn't be advertised or turned into something that needs to be showcased. Asking for Thompson to go all Live Aid over this is dumb. Demanding that he doesn't try to leave the AIDS issue behind is not.

As for the notion that liberals read the bible selectively - they are just as deplorable, short-sighted and arrogant as the people who think that gay marriage should be banned because of the bible yet still think divorces should be OK. You take it all and demand a theocracy or you shut up - that is what I have to say to bible-manipulators of all designs and designations.

"the current liberal de celebre"

Strewth, but strewth doesn't cut the mustard. Doesn't cut air for me. It was Obama and not his critics who lacked substance right?

"These are attributes that are admirable in a journalist; they should be required by all reputable publications."

Agreed - the journalist had no right to call Thompson a poor christian and tried to smear libertarians at the same time.
