Honestly I’ve been a proponent of solar-array microwave power since I first read about it years ago. While high mindedness is all well and good I honestly think of this in terms of national security. Combined with ground-based renewable sources (nuclear, solar - if they use it, hydro, etc) this right here could if deployed on a large enough scale meet all of America’s energy needs.

Can you say no more Middle East dependency? Given what we’re willing to spend in blood and capital to ensure a flow of oil this one should be a no-brainer.

Do Europe and the U.S., which has provided more funding for the project than any other country, have the stomach for another large, high-risk project with uncertain returns?

We certainly should IMO. But not just for what is the returns. We engage in science for discovery - be it if it has a practical purpose or no purpose at all. We engage in projects like these for the hope that it will - but reap the rewards of spin off technologies that themselves may just create something spectacular.

And we do it because no other nation will.
