A Democratic Foreign Policy

America, fear no more! If you’re not happy with Bush’s foreign policy, I have good news for you: the Democrats have a foreign policy of their own. Rep. Tom Lantos, a San Mateo Democrat and chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee:

“We have an alternative Democratic foreign policy. I view my job as beginning with restoring overseas credibility and respect for the United States.”

An alternative Democratic foreign policy? Probably because it is incredibly important for a country not to send mixed messages, right?

This is unbelievable: they’re now even saying it. I do not see how reasonable, not-overly partisan Democrats can defend Pelosi’s conduct.

I’m with the Washington Post.

Pelosi is hurting the Democratic Party by, yes, overreaching.

and there is a supreme amount to go wrong when you pretend - and yes - pretending is all that the Dem’s are doing so far - that they can handle foreign policy via the House.

And this early into the election season. When the Dem’s already had an advantage going into it. She’s likely to implode. All they had to do was just do feel-good legislation from 06 until the election in 08.

If you can’t wear the shoes, don’t put them on.

I agree. She’s overplaying her hand… bigtime. This is ludicrous.

Mvdg…What is surprising about this story is the amount of bad press Pelosi is getting in the MSM?

The Left side of the blogosphere is in full push-back mode, like Knute trying to pushback the sea, focusing on one criticism, then another.

I had not expected this reaction at all, to tell the truth. As you say, she seems to have overplayed her hand.

    Shades of Newt!

Marlowe: yeah, quite surprising isn’t it? On the other hand, we live in a soundbite era, this means that they got to have a controversy almost constantly. In the end the liberal elements of the MSM are less pro-democrats then pro-money

Why not spend a few moments examing the recent history of American politics, for no other reason than to salvage your credibility?

When last we had a Democratic president, there was absolutely no reluctance on the part of the Republicans from forging an “alternative” foreign policy.

In fact, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations committee, Jesse Helms, was able to blackmail the administration into giving him the opportunity to address the UN General Assembly, in order to pronounce to the world what the Republican foreign policy was.

Sorry, but you are just not dealing with reality here.

Joe: Sure I am Joe. That others did it in the past is of little concern. I notice that Pelosi is creating confusion, which is completely unnecessary.

Truly “they did it to” doesn’t jive well with me.

If the messages of the executive are bad, then sending a mixed message is a virtue, no? In other words, I don’t see how one can separate the procedural stuff from the substantive stuff in this instance.
