Goodbye McCain

April 4th, 2007 By: Michael van der Galien | Tags:

Seriously, how many blows can Senator John McCain overcome?

John Kerry says that John McCain’s people approached him in 04 “to engage in a discussion about his potentially being on the ticket as Vice President.”

It is amazing that McCain is still at 16% in the latest Rasmussen poll.

Meanwhile, McCain denies it. According to him, Kerry contacted him.

Well, whether it’s true or not, the damage is done. McCain can adjust his campaign as much as he wants, but I don’t think he’ll be able to make some grand comeback.

I remember the rumors circulating about that.

On the outset I’d have to lean towards it being Kerry that contacted McCain. the DNC did admit to trying to recruit him.

Hang a little while, Kerry will flip flop about it.

lol, that is of course possible, but I do not quite see how McCain might overcome all the negative news. He was, beforehand, the frontrunner, but to me, he’s a goner.

yeah, I think the front runner status was purely off of name recognition. Maybe back in 04 he still seemed like a possible choice but that dissipated quickly after the 04 election.

Unless you think all Democrats are liars:

“Past Democratic Party leaders tell The Hill that John McCain negotiated for two months with them to abandon the Republican Party at around the same time that Jim Jeffords crossed the aisle. Tom Daschle and Tom Downey told Bob Cusack that unlike their efforts with Jeffords and Lincoln Chafee, McCain’s top aide came to them:”

This was back in 2001 after McCain lost a bruising primary in South Carolina to Bush after his comments condemning Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson as “agents of intolerance”. To me it gives Kerry’s 2004 story more credence. It could kill McCain’s already struggling campaign, which would account why he would deny both incidents.

Unless you think all Democrats are liars:

yup, they are. As are Republicans.

Other Democrats who played a role “in the intense recruiting effort”: John Edwards, Edward Kennedy and Harry Reid. A source close to Edwards confirmed it.

Gives Kerry’s 04 Story zero credence.

    Flip Flop to ensue.

McCain’s problem is that many conservatives already think of him as a Democrat.

lol - Interested lets first wait and see whether Kerry sticks to the story. I have to admit that this seems to be a “where there is smoke, there is fire”-case. Too many indicators that McCain was, indeed, willing to switch parties / considering it very seriously. Whether Kerry’s story is completely accurate or not, I think it is not wrong for one to conclude that, perhaps, McCain is not the most loyal of Republicans. I’m not saying that this is a reason why people should not vote for him (I understand his frustration with the Republican party and one could also turn it around by saying that this means that McCain will be willing to reach across the aisle.. heh, being creative here), but I am quite sure that it will effect his popularity quite significantly.

As I said before, MvdG, you are an anomaly- an open-minded conservative, who changes his mind if the evidence changes, lol.Is it because being Dutch you have more objectivity?

I look at which side has more motivation to lie. Why would Kerry lie about this now? He’s not in the race, and the other two (Daschle and Downey) aren’t even in office any more. But, McCain knows this could be a real campaign killer with the conservative base of the GOP. Also, McCain was furious in 2001 with the tactics used by Bush in the primary: they made it look like he had an illegitemate bi-racial daughter in racially-challenged South Carolina. In reality, the daughter had been adopted by McCain and his wife, but the damage was crippling.

Interested if you think all Dems and Republicans lie, then why is it not possible that McCain’s side is lying?
